i love pittsburgh. it’s a fantastic city. yeah, being from the philly area, people may talk some shit, but it’s a damn fine city. it will alway be my home away from home. there’s not a better bar on the planet than the smiling moose, and there’s not a better roll than the OMGT from sushi 3!

but i digress. this halloween weekend, as is every halloween weekend, was the meeting of the marked. this is my first year doing this convention, and i had a blast. it was the exact crowd i would expect from pittsburgh, WONDERFUL. i stayed jumpin busy all weekend, and had to turn away people in the end. i got to do a lot of fun pieces, including a string of little zombie heads, which were on special due to the holiday and the city (how can’t you tattoo cheap zombie heads in pittsburgh, the home of romero?!)

unfortunately they’ve ousted the cover up and flash competitions from MOM due to lack of participation, so my efforts of selecting and framing were for naught. but i was told if there is more of a demand to enter things, it may be brought back. so get your shit together and do some cover ups and draw some flash!!

i may not have been able to enter in those categories, but i was able to enter tattoo of the day every day, and, with much diligence, was able to claim tattoo of the day on sunday for my rather large convoluted aztec quexacoatl tattoo, done on a head. yes, a head. keep an eye out for pics, they’ll be up next week.

i’d love to do this convention next year, but i missed my kids trick or treating this year and i don’t want to miss it again. so keep an eye out for me in 2011!!

i just got done watching history channel’s mega disasters episode “oil apocalypse.” downright scary.

the episode outlines the history of oil in our society and the consequences of our dependence. the scariest thing about it is that our alternatives are not much better. every single one will dismantle the ecosystem at varying rates, and not one solution will keep us out of a massive recession. the only options that will give clean, reliable fuel are solar and wind power, but both could take decades to be instituted to the degree americans consume.

truth is, oil will one day be used up, and there won’t be anymore. that’s it. our only real choice is a massive alteration of our way of life. conservation of fuel to the point of being stingy and a steady increase on reliance on solar and wind. these things need to be pushed as much as possible. it’s the only way.

in our modern world, every single major power is heavily dependent on fossil fuels, and that need increases every single day. supplies are beginning to dwindle, and we know that. why else are gas prices so high? why all this talk of off shore drilling? alternative energy? we are beginning to scramble. if you remove oil from our culture, you remove cars, buses, trucks, farm equipment, trains, airplanes, and countless plastics, medicines, and other day to day products. if we didn’t have those things it would thrust our entire society into a violent upheaval where people are literally fighting to survive. we would live out the remainder of our lives in a new dark age.

at this point, all we as citizens can do is conserve. try to drive less, walk anywhere when possible, carpool whenever feasible. i’ll do my damndest, i know that much. damn workin 20 miles away from home…

here’s a link to a clip from the show.

well, babies happen.

tuesday june 10th i was scheduled to have movers come to my house at 10am. due to the move, our landline had been turned off, and we don’t believe in the evils of cell phones. so when suzi started having contractions, there was no option but to drive her to a nearby relatives house and hold out to see if it was braxton hix(sp?). meanwhile, i am hanging out with movers.

of course, i had to go before they finished, and thank god for mikey holla. you my boy! my baby apparently wasn’t waiting. she wanted out.

it was truly a whirlwind once they made the decision to deliver. there i was again, in scrubs and a mask and those funny little shoe covers. i paced the same hall i paced when the girls were born. and i stood in the same room i saw my first girls delivered in. i watched the delivery, and this time i got to tape it. the only difference was this time my girl was further along and healthy. thank the gods for that one.

on june 10th 2008 i was presented with my daughter, Jewel Mellita Pangburn for the first time. i took days of staring into her eyes for my wife to find her name. but now that she has it, i couldn’t picture any other. she’s the latest addition to the pangburn clan, and i couldn’t wish for a more beautiful child.

i love you my darling! words can’t express my love and gratitude for entering our lives.

this year’s FORGED IN INK convention was tons of fun. i got there bright and early friday, ready to work! i had several pieces to work on, which have now been posted(mom heart, biomech, and big ass zombie) so check those out.

while i was there, i won 1st place for best cover up, and mike hill won tattoo of the day for friday. i got to hang out with good friends, make new friends, and basically have a good time while still working my ass off as always.

i spoke with industry vet nick wiggins for awhile while i was there, and the man has changed my entire thought process as far as design goes. from now on, aside from portraits and incredibly symmetrical pieces, i will be freehanding all of my work. he taught me that in order to achieve truly accurate layout on the human form, freehanding is the only way to go. i am beyond sold. expect a lot more of it from here on out.

i didn’t know what to expect when i got there, but what i got was a great time. i willbe back again next year.

of course, i am late as always with this post.

my guest spot at ART N SOUL in allentown PA went swimmingly. i worked on some really cool pieces and got to hang out with some great guys. the shop is immaculate. hands down the most beautiful shop i have ever set foot in. 2500sf with high ceilings with large work stations make for an impressive studio/gallery setting. i highly suggest going there.

and on another note, i want to congratulate curtis richter, owner of art n soul, on winning tattoo of the day saturday at the reading convention. good job, brother!

in allentown, there is this amazing antique/oddity/curiosity shop. it has totem poles and a brass tiger out front, so i thought “hmm. let’s see what’s in there.” expecting to find some neat little trinkets and knick knacks. instead i found the secret hiding place of some of the most wondrous artifacts i have ever laid eyes on outside of a museum. this place was insane. i stepped inside and was looking at 500 year old tantric skulls from tibet, 2000 year old jade swords, 7 foot tall jade crane statues, and other assorted treasures. the owner fo the store was one of the most interesting characters i have ever spoken with. i ended up buying a couple of things (of course not the $10,000 antique african sculpture) and by the time i walked the 5 blocks back to art n soul, i felt like if i went back, the store would be gone in a whisp of ephemeral smoke, like something from a fairy tale. if you ever go to allentown, go to hamilton street between 10th and 11th. you can’t miss it. look for the big brass tiger.

ANYway, i really enjoyed my few days up there, and i cannot wait to go back!

everything has a pink glow when streetlights light your house. through child proof windows with those little tabs i am bathed in a warm electric glow. i can almost hear them buzzing contently. there’s one across the street by the empty lot where i walk my dog that fades in and out every minute or so all night long. it builds to a crescendo of brilliant pink and then quickly snaps out, only to begin the long trek to that fantastic illumination once again. that’s my favorite streetlight.

sometimes i wish my heart gave off that glow. one that no matter what malfunction it possessed, it was still appreciated for just that reason. unfortunately, for how much the human machine loves to marvel at its own brilliance of invention, it also assigns rigid structures and complex ritual ordained to be the word as law.

no, the human heart is not allowed the passion to rise and fall in arcing static waves. it is not allowed to scream until it burns out, then rest until it has the strength to scream again. god forbid the structure is rocked or even gently swayed. no, the human heart is expected to move at the steady hum of every other average streetlamp.

when an electrical device in public use is deemed to be out of order, it is only a matter of time before workers are called to come fix the problem. they’ll pull up in their big white truck and pull that little man-basket up to the telephone poll.they’ll tinker about for a few minutes and replace that faulty bulb, restoring the entire alleyway to an even pink.

the thing nobody realizes is that i’ll miss that old bulb. i’ve grown attached to it.
